The breast implant incision method is one of your biggest decisions if you are considering breast augmentation. There are many factors that go into your choice of the incision placement. It is not all about the size of the scar, though that is one of the critical issues. Where are you thinking about having your incision?
There are 4 typical areas of your body in which a plastic surgeon will consider placing the implant through:
One common area is through your nipple. This is a good place especially to hide the scar. Naturally there may be an increased chance of loss of sensitivity as a result. Another option is through the armpit. The advantage here is that the incision is away from the breast, though the scar may be a little more obvious wearing sleeveless tops. The third option is under the breast fold. This may be the most common while the only real drawback is that the scar is obvious in the nude. Finally, the belly button incision is a fine option for saline breast implants, but the placement can be a challenge for the doctor. In other words, there is an increased probability that the implant will not be placed in the most natural position. Please be sure to reseach each of these methods with each of the benefits and problems.
Not all incision methods are available for all implants. For example the TUBA, or belly button breast augmentation method, cannot be done with silicone breast implants. However, each of the other options are available for both saline and silicone. While the scar is generally about one inch larger with silicone implants, it can still be hidden well especially when done through the nipple. Be prepared to talk your doctor's language by doing some research on the internet first to see what method is right for you.
